What is it?
You’ve probably seen the Olympic athletics in London and the All Blacks running around with bits of coloured tape on their legs, shoulders and backs. Well, this uniquely designed elastic tape has recently taken the sports medicine world by storm.
This amazing taping method was developed by Dr. Kenzo Kase over 25 years ago in Japan, and has more recently become the “Gold” standard in rehabilitative taping.
How does it work?
Kinesio taping provides ongoing soft tissue stimulation after treatment prolonging the effects of physiotherapy treatment between visits. Muscles can be taped to allow relaxation and support or to promote contraction and strength depending on how it is applied. Joint positions can be corrected with skilled application. Kinesio tape is great for acute injuries easing swelling and reducing pain. Its elastic properties allow you to continue moving without the tape coming off. It is extremely comfortable and can be worn 24 hours per day for up to 3-5 days
Who is it for?
It is for both athletes and non-athletes, anyone who has a joint or soft tissue injury, muscle weakness or tightness. Physiotherapists will often apply the tape at the end of a treatment session to help continue the effects of mobilisation, stretching or strengthening that took place.
